Bae Systems:
Case Study

VIDEO OBJECTIVE

BAE Systems, a leading British defense contractor, engaged Explainer.nz to create a pivotal explainer video for their £20 billion bid to renew the Australian Navy’s fleet with the Type 26 Global Combat Ship. The goal was to persuade the Australian government that BAE’s advanced frigate was the best choice.

Introduction
A warship is cutting through the ocean waters under a clear sky. The large white text above the ship reads, "BUILDING THE SHIP." The ship's sleek design and the waves created by its movement suggest it is traveling at high speed, akin to an animated video example showcasing precision and power.
HOLLYWOOD WORTHY EFFECTS

Given that the Type 26 ship was still in development, capturing real footage was not feasible. We turned to high-end animation techniques, integrating Hollywood-level visual effects to avoid the typical appearance of standard 3D animation. By compositing our animated frigate into actual ocean footage, we created realistic effects that showcased the ship navigating through rough seas at full speed.

A clipboard holds a paper with typed text. The text reads: "Voiceover narration: BAE Systems is committed to transforming Australia's shipbuilding industry... Creating an economic ripple effect that will be felt beyond the sector. Five thousand jobs - a skilled workforce, fully Australian... An animated video example of this vision underscores our dedication.
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

The focus was on illustrating the Type 26’s defense and security benefits rather than portraying it solely as a military asset. Our explainer video highlighted the positive impacts on humanitarian missions, job creation, economic growth, and deterrence capabilities. 3D animation allowed us to effectively showcase these advantages and the ship’s capabilities.

CLIENT REQUIREMENTS

We used wireframe models within real-world live-action footage to achieve photorealistic and cinematic visuals. This approach helped visualize the Type 26 in a realistic setting before fully rendering the final animation.

A silhouette of a military helicopter flying next to a large, distinguished warship with various antennas and equipment on the deck. The image, reminiscent of an animated video example, is simplistic with minimal details, focused on the outlines of the helicopter and the warship.

FROM WIREFRAME TO cinematic footage

Our animators crafted dramatic sea scenes, transforming wireframe models into lifelike animations. Use the tool below to view the evolution from wireframe to polished cinematic footage.

WIREFRAME

A naval ship sails in the ocean, and a helicopter flies nearby. The words "Sound Design" are prominently overlaid in large white text across the image, reminiscent of an animated video example. The background features a sky with a mix of clouds and a hint of sunlight.
FILM-QUALITY SOUND EFFECTS

Reproducing realistic sounds for a large naval vessel and accompanying helicopters on the open ocean posed a challenge.

Our foley artist meticulously crafted and mixed each sound, creating a soundtrack that mimicked real-life audio with precision.

WITH AN EYE ON THE DETAIL

Every detail was meticulously crafted, from the mission bay helicopter landing pad to the NH-90 helicopter, complete with the Australian armed forces’ kangaroo emblem. We focused on every element, including editing style, music selection, and backdrop design, to ensure a compelling and accurate representation of the Type 26 frigate.

An architectural line drawing of the Titanic, showing its detailed structure including the ship's deck, lifeboats, chimneys, and other elements. The image is slightly pixelated and primarily in shades of green and white, reminiscent of an animated video example.
A pixelated image of a large battleship with several gun turrets, a central command tower, multiple antennas, and other maritime equipment evokes the style of an animated video. The pixelation makes it difficult to discern finer details of the ship.
