CASE STUDY: HAND DRAWN ANIMATION

CONTRACT AWARD WITH THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT
VIDEO OBJECTIVE

This animated explainer video tells the story of a groundbreaking autism service for children in Staffordshire, created to eliminate waiting lists through an innovative approach. The goal was to visually narrate the service’s impact in a way that resonates with both children and their families.

Introduction
SCRIPT DEVELOPMENT

To convey the success of this children’s service, our creative team developed a script that framed the narrative as a children’s picture book. This approach allowed us to present the story in an engaging manner, capturing the essence of the service’s unique model.

A clipboard with a piece of paper clipped to it. The paper contains printed text that reads: "Voiceover narration: To understand how different and innovative this service is, we need to take a closer look at the Autism service. Before Midlands Psychology took on the contract, the service was in crisis.
THE SCRIPT
Illustration of diverse characters standing on an open book. The background showcases the word "CHARACTERS" in large, bold letters. The characters include men, women, children, and people of different body types and attire, reflecting the psychological depth found in stories from the Midlands.
Illustration of six characters standing on an open book. The characters include three adults, one holding a child's hand, and three children. The word "CHARACTERS" appears in bold white text above them. The background is a blend of warm and cool colors reminiscent of the Midlands’ serene landscapes.
A grayscale cartoon image of a family: a man, a woman, and a child standing side by side. The man and woman appear concerned, while the child looks unhappy. Beside them are five colored circles—orange, green, blue, red, and purple—representing Midlands Psychology’s therapeutic approach.
Designing unique characters
Play Video

Inspired by the charm of classic children’s illustrated books, our team hand-drew characters influenced by the iconic style of Quentin Blake. These characters were designed to embody the warmth and personality of the service, making the explainer video animation both memorable and impactful.

Illustration of a two-story house with a sign in front, surrounded by a grassy yard and trees in the Midlands. The word "BACKGROUNDS" is prominently displayed in bold white letters across the image, subtly suggesting the importance of environments in psychology.
A stylized illustration of a vintage stone house with tall windows and a red door, set in a garden with trees against a backdrop of a blue Midlands sky. A signboard near the house reads "BACKGROUNDS." The artwork has a hand-drawn, whimsical aesthetic that evokes the serenity often explored in psychology.
INSPIRED BY Storybooks

We combined organic hand-drawn illustrations with 3D elements to create a visually enchanting pop-up storybook effect. This blend of traditional and modern animation techniques added depth and dimension to the video, enhancing its appeal to the target audience.

A sketched image depicts a group of people standing in line at an immigration checkpoint in the Midlands. They are waiting to be processed by an official seated at a desk under a sign that reads "immigration." A clock is mounted on the wall behind the desk, adding to the psychological tension.
THE CONCEPT
A sketch composed of nine panels arranged in a 3x3 grid depicts various scenes: a house transformation, a classroom, a simple structure, a family meal, a group of people with a banner in the Midlands, a single desk, a moving house, another house, and a tall building. The image has a rough, torn edge on the right.
DESIGNING THE VIDEO: STORYBOARD

Storyboarding was a critical step in shaping the narrative flow of the video. By sketching out the story on paper, we were able to map out the most effective way to convey the service’s benefits, ensuring a seamless transition from concept to final animation.

FINAL VIDEO

The finished explainer video animation was a true work of art. The time and creative effort invested in hand illustrating the characters and crafting a compelling narrative paid off significantly, resulting in a video that not only explained the service offering but also captured the hearts of viewers.
